Berry Good Info!
Blueberries are one of the smaller soft fruits and are tight-skinned and blue/ purple in colour. They are sweet with a slight acidic taste and can be eaten raw, used in smoothies and compotes and cooked in baked goods, most commonly muffins, pancakes and pies.
Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits in the world; they’re soft when bitten and red in colour. Strawberries are sweet, sometimes slightly tangy and the seeds create a faint crunch.
Blackberries and Raspberries are aggregate fruits, which are fruits, developed from several ovaries, made up of drupelets, and in fact are not classified botanically as berries. They are categorised as berries due to their name, but are simply soft fruits.
Blackberries are soft-fruits starting red in colour, and ripening to a black/ purple. Prime blackberry season is august to October and when fully ripe blackberries have a deep, sweet flavour with a hint of tartness but can be bitter when under ripe.
Raspberries are a red/ pink aggregate fruit, however, some varieties can be dark purple and mistaken for blackberries. They are sweet and sometimes can be slightly sharp; similarly to blackberries they can be bitter when under ripe.
